John Bakas' Objection & Rebuttal to Toni Leake's Grievance
Dear Residents:
On October 22, 2007, the other four members of the
LSC CDD board without any legal authority adopted an Order permanently removing me, an elected public official,
from the CDD board of supervisors.
Previously, on August 20, 2007, I had strongly objected to the CDD board of
supervisors and its lawyer that any attempt by the CDD board to remove me from the board would be in violation of the law.
On November 13, 2007, after I received the October 22, 2007 Order from the LSC CDD board, I filed a lawsuit for extraordinary writs and an injunction to prevent the Lake St. Charles Community Development District, Lorelei Bowden, David A. Nelson, Virginia "Ginny" Mueller Gianakos, W. Rex Speer, and Antoinette "Toni" Manko Leake from blocking and interfering with my rights as a duly-elected public official.
On November 16, 2007 I filed a motion for emergency relief.
On November 20, 2007, the judge heard the matter for 30 minutes and continued the hearing to Monday, November 26, 2007 at 11:30 am.
On Monday, November 26, 2007, the judge ruled that the board’s Order was null and void and exceeded the jurisdiction of the board of supervisors.

Local Benedictine Monastery
St. Leo Abbey Website
Local Benedictine Monastery with Guest House,
Retreat Center and Gift Shop located
about 45 minutes north of Riverview.
Open to everyone from all walks of life.
The monks invite everyone from all walks of life to enjoy the grounds, pray with the monks, visit the Abbey Gift Shop and stay in the Guest House or Retreat Center.
The only Benedictine monastery in Florida is located
just 45 minutes north of Riverview in the rural small town of St. Leo.
There are only about 50 Benedictine monasteries
in the United States so it is a rare treat to have
one located so close to Riverview.
Every 15 minutes the bells of St. Leo Abbey ring out over the beautiful grounds consisting of rolling hills and lovely Lake Jovita, the monks of St. Leo Abbey welcome everyone to their monastery and retreat center. Spend a few hours, a day or make reservations for a longer stay in their Guest House. The monks operate a retreat center to accommodate larger groups. Visitors may pray with the monks during any of their five daily prayer sessions. While you are there be sure to visit the Abbey Gift Shop managed by Brother Matthew.
The historic Benedictine monks are a very ancient Order of monks, an unbroken chain of meditation and prayer stretching back over 1500 years. Benedictine monks follow a Rule for monastic living written by St. Benedict. A main activity of Benedictine monks is the singing of the psalms in Gregorian Chants several times a day. Hospitality is an important Benedictine tenant and as such people from all walks of life and backgrounds are welcomed by the monks.
St. Leo Abbey is not an isolated monastery but is located beside St. Leo University and students often stroll the grounds. A public library is also located beside the monastery, restrooms are inside the library. Visit the monastery Welcome Center (across from the Gift Shop) to pick up a Walking Tour brochure. A restaurant is located across the street on The Abbey Golf Course. Dade City is about a ten minute drive down the road.
John and I often visit St. Leo Abbey to recharge our spiritual batteries.

Byrd, president of the
Friends of the
Riverview Library, has
grown interested in
the Indian origins of
the area.
``I've just
learned,'' she said,
``that I live in Peru,
(pronounced PEE-RU),
the area south of the
Alafia River. Those
living north are
officially in
Riverview.''
The Alafia River
probably got its name
from an old Indian
term meaning ``River
of Fire,'' since the
phosphorus in the
water caused glints of
light to appear at
night.
The settlement
located on the south
side of the Alafia
River was originally
named Peru, a Miami
Indian word meaning
``a straight place in
the river.''
Eventually the whole
area was designated
Riverview, after the
Riverview settlement
on the north side of
the Alafia River. Both
north and south
settlements began in
1890, the same year
phosphate was
discovered in the
area.
John and Terri
Bakas, designers of
the Riverview Online
Web site, have been
studying the area's
Indian history, and
keep updating their
Web site with new
information.

Riverview,
Florida is about 12 miles south of
Tampa, Florida, United States of America. Riverview is an
unincorporated
area
of
Hillsborough
County.
Lake
St. Charles (Circle is Community Center at 6801 Colonial
Lake
Dr.). During
this time of year you'll see many of these birds on the lake.
Take a walk along the trail or many residents just look out of
their lakefront windows.
Riverview was one of first settled areas
in Hillsborough County in about 1840 although the US
Government had a fort at Tampa beginning in June
1824.
Read about the Indians
who had left the Tampa Bay region long before Florida became a
state March 3, 1845.
The webmasters, Terri and John Bakas, are
residents of Lake St. Charles. We maintain this web site for the enjoyment of
the neighborhood. This web site is not associated with the C.D.D. or the
Homeowners Association.
