If you like to read, take your favorite book, and spend a day
reading and watching Old Tampa Bay and also climb the Indian mound at Philipee
Park. This is the site of a Tocobaga village (scroll down to
the bottom of this offsite link
until you see Safety Harbor Temple Mound. The Tocobaga was the
largest Tampa Bay tribe when the Spanish arrived in the early
1500s.)
Extensive, detailed. The hidden pearl on this web site is the
interesting historical information that is given for many places on each
trail.
This is a good program, seeking to connect Florida's communities by
greenways and trails. From the web site: "The Office of
Greenways & Trails works directly with local communities, developers,
private landowners and state and federal agencies to facilitate the
establishment of the statewide
system of greenways and trails.
From the web site: "The
goal of the Florida Trail Association is the development of a continuous
hiking trail the length of Florida.
Starting in the Big Cypress National Preserve in the south and
extending to the GulfIslands National Seashore and Blackwater River State Forest in the north."
Visitors must complete a visitor application and there are limited
visitor facilities. Generally for scientific researches, Archbold
does allow general visitors. What an exciting way to spend the day and
maybe help the botanists, "Hey, I am a visitor. I was
tramping in the woods and saw this cool plant, so I pulled it up and
brought back for you to look at!"
Archbold Biological Station is about 2 hours (110 miles) southeast
of Riverview in the middle of the state near Lake Placid. Terri
and I have not been here, but I would like to see their 18 minute film
of the Lake Wales Ridge and it has a library on Florida natural history.

Ask your questions, share boating wisdom: When launching a boat,
back the boat into the water -- pulling the boat into the water won't
instill confidence in your crew.

Sponsored in part by Lowry Park Zoo, this is an exciting eco-tour on
the Hillsborough River.
This is a small, rustic, two-cabin facility on the Hillsborough
River. It looks interesting, but we have not stayed here. It
is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood just
north of Fowler Avenue. It might seem more inviting if we had
to drive 3 hours to get to it -- then we might feel as if we were
getting away for the weekend!
