Ruskin.  In 1907, Dr. George Miller founded Ruskin on the utopian teachings of John Ruskin. The area’s namesake was a prominent British artist, art critic,  geologist, teacher, writer, social reformer and philosopher.  Ruskin’s social teachings were based on the idea that education should be universally available. Dr. Miller began Ruskin College as part of his model Ruskin community built on the philosophy of combining intellectual endeavors with manual labor. George Miller's home remains today.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places and “remains a symbol of the utopian origins of the community of Ruskin.” 

Incidentally, there were other Ruskin communities in Georgia, Tennessee, Nebraska, and the Midwest.

Of all the Ruskin colonies, Ruskin Florida has best preserved its heritage connection to one of the greatest men of the Victorian age.
