Florida Mottled Duck at LSCThe Florida mottled duck, shown above with its most recent family members, is found only in Florida and does not migrate beyond the state. It is a close relative to the mallard. Male and female look similar to the female mallard. The mottled ducks have unstreaked buffy throats and unmarked yellow bills. This little family was recently spotted in the pond on Colonial Lake Drive.

You may have seen this Great Blue Heron fishing in the ponds and lakes in Lake St. Charles. Heron's are territorial by nature, and so typically you will only find one Heron per pond. The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in North America, and has an "other-worldly squawk" which can sound unsettling at night. This Great Blue Heron can usually be found fishing in the pond on Colonial Lake Drive.
